Two servants of the house of Capulet were talking in the streets of Verona:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe won\u2019t take it any more!\u201d said Sampson.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cFrom now on, we\u2019ll give as good as we get!\u201d Gregory replied.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time for us to settle accounts(\u7b97\u8d26) with those Montagues!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIf they start something, we\u2019re ready!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe best defense is attack!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As they were talking, they saw two servants of the Montagues coming down the street.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cDraw your weapon(\u6b66\u5668)! Here come two Montagues!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cMy naked(\u62d4\u51fa\u9798\u7684) weapon is out. Now start a fight! I will back you up.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cHow? By running away?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be afraid. I\u2019m right here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing about you that could scare anyone, that\u2019s what scares me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe want to have the law on our side, so let\u2019s make them start the fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll give them a dirty look as I pass by, and let them take it as they want.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cYou mean: take it as they dare.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I will bite my thumb(\u62c7\u6307) at them\u2014which is a disgrace(\u7f9e\u8fb1) to them, if they don\u2019t do something about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

So Sampson went up to the Montagues, and made the insulting(\u4fae\u8fb1\u6027\u7684) gesture to them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cDo you bite your thumb at us, sir?\u201d one of the Montagues asked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI bite my thumb, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cDo you bite your thumb at us, sir?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Then Sampson asked Gregory, \u201cIs the law on our side if I say \u2018yes\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d was the reply.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

So Sampson said to the Montagues, \u201cNo, sir, I do not bite my thumb at you, sir; but I bite my thumb, sir. Are you looking for a fight, sir?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cA fight, sir? No, sir,\u201d was the Montague\u2019s reply.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIf you are looking for one, you have come to the right place.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I serve a better man than you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cNo, you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cYes, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cYou lie!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cDraw your swords, if you are men!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And so all four of them drew their swords and started fighting, right there in the street.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But before anybody could get hurt, Benvolio, a gentleman of the Montague family, arrived.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He saw what was happening, and knocked aside their swords.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cStop this fighting!\u201d said Benvolio.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t know what you\u2019re doing!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But at that moment Tybalt appeared.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He was a Capulet who had a very strong hatred of the Montagues, and was the main reason that the feud(\u5919\u4ec7) was still continuing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI see you, Benvolio!\u201d said Tybalt, drawing his sword as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cYou have attacked these men, and now you shall pay for it with your life!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI am only trying to keep the peace,\u201d Benvolio replied.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cEither put away your sword, or help me separate these men and send them home.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cYou talk of peace, with a drawn sword in your hand?\u201d said Tybalt.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cPeace! I hate the very word! And I hate all Montagues, and you in particular.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Now defend yourself, coward(\u61e6\u592b)!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Then Tybalt fiercely attacked Benvolio, who had to defend himself as best he could.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Fortunately, before too long, an officer arrived, together with three or four ordinary citizens armed with clubs and long spears.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cCitizens, stop them!\u201d said the officer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cUse your weapons if you have to!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cDown with the Capulets! Down with the Montagues!\u201d shouted the citizens.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Old Capulet, the head of the family, had heard about what happened and arrived with his wife.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cGive me my long sword, now!\u201d he said to his wife.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure you mean your crutch(\u814b\u6756), dear,\u201d said his wife.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI mean my sword, woman! Don\u2019t you see that Old Montague has arrived, and is about to draw his sword to fight me?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

For Old Montague and his wife had also just arrived.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cYou villain(\u6076\u68cd) Capulet!\u201d Montague shouted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cLet me get at you!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But his wife held him back, and said, \u201cI will not let you get even one foot further into trouble than you already are!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Prince(\u4eb2\u738b) Escalus, the ruler of Verona, had also heard about the fight, and now arrived with his guards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The two sides at once stopped fighting, and each side tried to look as if the other side had started it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Prince Escalus said to them all:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cYou disobedient(\u4e0d\u987a\u4ece\u7684) subjects and enemies of peace!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

What is this fire in your hearts that can only be put out with blood?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Are you men, or wild beasts?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Let those blood-stained hands of yours drop their weapons at once, and let your ears now hear my judgment(\u5224\u51b3)!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There have already been three such fights in the streets of Verona.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

They started with nothing more serious than words.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

They ended only when the peaceful, elderly citizens of Verona were forced to leave their peaceful pleasures, come out into the streets, and separate you by force.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Their hands are calloused(\u751f\u8327\u7684) from the arts of peace; yours, from the arts of destruction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

If ever you disturb(\u6270\u4e71) our streets again, you shall pay for it with your lives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
